How are you? Franzi and I had this cool idea: since there hasn't been much news from you guys lately, how would you feel about doing an interview for us? We would be putting it on my yahoo board and on her website, and you guys could put it anywhere you want (on your myspace, website, whatever). If you're interested, here are the questions:
1.) Everybody knows that you two are phenomenal vocalists and that Nancy played piano on the song "I Could" which is on your "Movin' On" CD, your "Sisters of the Moon" CD, and your MySpace page. Do either of you play any other instruments? How has being in Blackmore's Night affected this?
MADDY-WELL I PLAY SOME GUITAR, THAT'S ACTUALLY HOW I MET MY HUSBAND-- HE WAS MY GUITAR TEACHER. OF COURSE THE LESSONS SORT OF PETERED OFF AFTER WE STARTED DATING BUT IT'S SOMETHING I KEEP GOING BACK TO AND TRYING TO DEVELOP.
NANCY- I STARTED LEARNING THE PENNYWHISTLE BUT MY REAL DESIRE IS TO CONTINUE TO DEVELOP MY PIANO SKILLS.
2.) Are you currently looking for musicians for an upcoming CD?
MADDY - YES, WE’VE SPOKEN TO A FEW PEOPLE. BUT HAVEN’T MADE ANY DECISIONS YET. WE’VE ALSO COLLABORATED ON SOME SONGS WITH MY HUSBAND AND THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR FROM "THE VERY US ARTISTS".
NANCY - WE MAY EVEN INCLUDE SOME PEOPLE WE’VE WORKED WITH IN THE PAST.
3.) We know you've been working with the Very Us Artists and have written two songs for CDs of theirs, "Begin Again" for Nascence and Child and "Right Past Me" for their RPM album, Roughly Produced Masterpieces. Are you going to continue working with them or are you going to work on a CD of your own? BOTH - WE HAVE ENOUGH SONGS NOW FOR A FULL CD AND PLAN ON GOING TO A PROFESSIONAL STUDIO IN THE NEXT YEAR. WE WILL ALSO CONTINUE TO COLLABORATE AND WORK WITH "THE VERY US ARTISTS" SINCE WE REALLY ENJOY WORKING WITH THEM AND BELIEVE IN THE PROJECT.
4.) Are you trying to make music of a specific genre, or are you going to try to make music from a wide variety of genres? What do you think those genres will be?
NANCY - WE WANT TO CREATE MUSIC THAT UTILIZES OUR LOVE OF VARIOUS GENRES INCLUDING CLASSICAL, POP, ROCK AND EVEN JAZZ. OUR EXPERIENCE IN BLACKMORE’S NIGHT HAS ALSO SHAPED AND INFLUENCED OUR STYLE BECAUSE WE LEARNED A LOT ABOUT SONG STRUCTURE AND WAYS TO FIND INSPIRATION, ESPECIALLY INCORPORATING MUSIC AND INSTRUMENTS OF THE PAST.
MADDY- NANCY AND I HAVE ALSO BEEN LISTENING RECENTLY TO A LOT OF POPULAR SINGER/SONG-WRITERS THAT WE ADMIRE INCLUDING REGINA SPEKTOR, SARAH BAREILLES, IMOGEN HEAP, KT TUNSTALL ETC.
5.) Are you planning any concerts or tours anytime soon?
BOTH - OUR FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS IS TO WORK ON OUR ALBUM AND THEN WE WILL START LOOKING FOR MUSICIANS TO COLLABORATE AND PLAY OUT WITH.
6.) How do you get inspired to write music?
MADDY –WE GET INSPIRED BY SITUATIONS IN LIFE, THE SPECTRUM OF EMOTIONS (SADNESS, HAPPINESS, ANGER, DISAPPOINTMENT). WE STRIVE TO INCORPORATE OUR EXPERIENCES AND TRUE FEELINGS IN OUR LYRICS AND MUSIC.
NANCY-ALSO IF YOU’RE EXPOSED TO SOMETHING THAT ELICITS STRONG EMOTIONS SUCH AS A MOVIE, ROMANCE, A FRIEND’S INNER TURMOIL, THE NEWS—ALL THESE FACTORS CONTRIBUTE TO OUR CREATIVITY.
7.) When you started working on your first CD, "Movin' On," did you ever think you would be part of a band with a world famous guitarist? Did you think you would ever have as many fans as you do currently?
BOTH-YOU NEVER EXPECT SOMETHING LIKE THAT YOU ONLY DREAM AND HOPE THAT WHAT YOU DO WILL TOUCH OTHERS AND HOPEFULLY ADD TO THEIR LIVES IN SOME WAY. WE DO CONSIDER OURSELVES FORTUNATE TO HAVE HAD THAT OPPORTUNITY AND TO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GAIN THE EXPOSURE AND RECOGNITION THROUGH OUR INVOLVEMENT IN BLACKMORE’S NIGHT. NO MATTER WHAT IS SAID ABOUT OUR REASONS FOR LEAVING THE BAND, ONE FACT REMAINS “WE WILL ALWAYS BE GRATEFUL”.
8.) Are you planning to make and sell any merchandise like hats or posters on your website or myspace?
NANCY-EVENTUALLY IF THERE IS A DEMAND WE WOULD LOVE TO!
MADDY – I HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT USING OUR LOGO, THE CARTOON VERSION OF US THAT NANCY DREW AS PART OF OUR ALBUM, AS SOMETHING TO INCLUDE IN OUR MARKETING AND MERCHANDISE. YOU KNOW LIKE AN IZOD SHIRT WITH THE CARTOON IN THE UPPER LEFT HAND CORNER. WE ARE OPEN TO ANY SUGGESTIONS!
9.) Are you planning on making any more music videos for new songs?
BOTH - YES, WE PLAN ON MAKING A VIDEO OUT OF ONE OF OUR NEWEST SONGS THAT WE HAVE YET TO RECORD. WE MAY EVEN POST IT ON YOUTUBE.
10.) Are you planning on doing any cover songs on future albums?
BOTH-WE ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON A LIST AND LEARNING COVER SONGS THAT WE WOULD LIKE TO DO. WE ALWAYS LOOK FOR SONGS THAT ARE MEANINGFUL AND HAVE LOTS OF HARMONIES.
11.) Are you working on a new album right now? What should us fans expect it to be like? BOTH-OUR NEW ALBUM WILL INCLUDE SOME SONGS WE’VE ALREADY RECORDED REVAMPED AND SOME NEW SONGS THAT WERE INSPIRED BY RECENT EXPERIENCES.
12.) Anyone with a working pair of ears can tell that your mom is an excellent singer as well. Would you ever consider doing a song with her? BOTH- THAT IS A GREAT IDEA. WE WOULD LOVE TO. WE DO HAVE A SONG THAT WE WROTE YEARS AGO THAT WE SING IN THREE PART HARMONY WITH OUR MOM. THIS IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING WE WOULD CONSIDER!
13.) What is your favorite project you guys have done so far in your careers (together or separately)? BOTH - WE WOULD SAY BEING ABLE TO OPEN FOR BLACKMORE’S NIGHT IN FRONT OF THOUSANDS OF FANS WAS DEFINITELY A HIGHLIGHT FOR US AS WELL AS RECEIVING STANDING OVATIONS FOR “CHILD IN TIME”.
WE ALSO LOVE JUST WRITING TOGETHER AT HOME IN OUR HOME STUDIO JUST THE TWO OF US.
14.) What is your favorite song either of you have ever written?
MADDY- ‘BEGIN AGAIN’ AND THE SONG THAT NANCY JUST WROTE WHICH WE HAVEN’T RECORDED YET.
NANCY- ‘BEGIN AGAIN” BECAUSE WE WERE GOING THROUGH A DIFFICULT TIME WHEN WE WROTE IT AND WHEN I LISTEN TO IT I FEEL PROUD BECAUSE WE TOOK HARDSHIP AND TURNED IT INTO SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL.
Thank you so much for your time and your amazing music!
THANK YOU BOTH SO MUCH FOR THINKING OF THIS INTERVIEW AND FOR CONTINUING TO SUPPORT US. IT DEFINITELY INSPIRES US TO CONTINUE TO DREAM AND MAKE MUSIC!
LOVE AND MUSIC ALWAYS, MADDY AND NANCY
Lizzy and Franzi
